Aurora A/FX Super II

In 1972 Aurora offered what was to date the most technically sophisticated HO slot car ever produced. Costing three to four times what a then box-stock Aurora A/FX slot car sold for, these cars were snapped up by the growing number of serious HO slot car racers looking for the ultimate in high-speed racing performance and handling.
These special Aurora A/FX Super II cars sold for $12.00 dollars. While by current standards that doesn't seem like all that much to pay for a state of the art HO slot car, taking into account inflation, these cars would have cost nearly $50.00 in today's dollars.

Based on a standard Aurora A/FX chassis these cars included machined aluminum wheels front and rear, front and side chassis weights, a hot dual-wound motor called a Quadra-Lam, special motor brush assemblies with heat sinks and stronger motor magnets, topped off with a light-weight pre-painted Lexan body.
Early Aurora Super II chassis also included a special set of pickup shoes with small copper braids attached at the front edge. These were later dropped and replaced with standard pickup shoes which reduced friction and were easier to maintain and replace. For 1972 only an orange Lexan body was available.
For 1973 the Aurora catalog listed the Aurora A/FX Super II in four different body colors with gold-plated pickup shoes replacing the troublesome copper braids used on the original cars.

Aurora sold a fair number of these exotic HO racers, but few remain today. From time to time a nice one in good working condition comes up for auction on eBay, but they normally sell for well over $150.00 dollars if they are an original Aurora Super II. The Aurora A/FX Quadra-Lam motor alone often sells for close to $100 dollars on eBay.
Aurora offered all of the parts to build or repair a Super II. Collectors wanting to purchase an Aurora Super II on eBay should make certain they're getting a factory original car and not one built up from Aurora NOS repair parts.
